OPTION1:
Literature and Literature

This will be a 4 to 6 page paper ??" this is four to six pages of text; the Works Cited page does not count toward the page length. The paper will have at least two sources listed on the Works Cited Page ??" any paper lacking a Works Cited page or appropriately referenced works will have 20 points deducted from its grade. Submit the essay electronically via its assignment page on the course’s Blackboard site. Any paper turned in via e-mail ??" unless previously arranged to do so ??" will be penalized 50 (fifty) points ??" that is, if you just e-mail me your paper after the essay’s due date without talking to me about e-mailing it for some reason then I deduct 50 points from whatever score the paper earns.

You will first choose at least two different works of literature, preferably two that complement one another or are somehow at odds with each other. Then you will write of how the pair is alike and how the duo differ. You may choose more than two works, but may not use more than four.
Some suggestions: Chuck Palahniuk’s excerpt from Fight Club and Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”; Chuck Palahniuk’s “Swan Song” and Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People”; Natasha Trethewey’s “Native Guard” and the Civil War Poems of Walt Whitman; one or more of Mary Oliver’s poems and “The Waking” by Theodore Roethke; the poems of Ted Berrigan and the poems of Frank O’Hara; Sylvia Plath’s “Morning Song” and “Child”; Allen Ginsberg’s “Supermarket in California” and Ted Berrigan’s “Whitman in Black”; Frank O’Hara’s “Pearl Harbor” and Theodore Roethke’s “I Knew a Woman”; Langston Hughes’ “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” and Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself”; Billy Collins’ “Forgetfulness” and Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art”; Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers” and Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”
There are other possible combinations. If you are unsure if the works you have selected work well together or repel each other enough, then ask me about their compatibility.
Your essay should have an introduction - with thesis statement; body paragraphs that compare and/or contrast the selected reading(s); a conclusion that wraps up the paper along with a restatement (not a copy and paste) of the thesis.

Write from the third person perspective ??" using “the poem shows…” rather than the first-person view of “When I read the poem, I saw…”; in addition, refer to the author by last name ??" after you have stated his or her complete name in the opening paragraph. Write in the present tense ??" “Ginsberg writes of his generation…” rather than “Ginsberg wrote of his generation as…”. When citing the text use the author’s last name followed by page number the reference is from ??" for example, (Ginsberg 1037). For other questions about using MLA citation for your paper, refer to the OWL Online Writing Lab at Purdue University and click on “MLA 2009 Formatting and Style Guide” ??" http://owl.english.purdue.edu ??" or ask me. There is also a MLA Citation Guide available on the course site on Blackboard.
An essay written in the first-person point of view will be penalized 25 points.

You should be familiar with a comparison/contrast essay, what with having written at least several in your career as a student up to this point. If you are unsure of how to proceed, ask me for assistance.

Comparing and/or contrasting form, rhyme, metre, line length, stanza make-up, and similar surface characteristics as the basis of an essay should be avoided. If all or part of an essay contains such undemanding similarities or effortless differences then said paper will receive a grade of zero. Complex thought, deep-rooted insight, and pointed commentary are what will earn high mark. That other effortless drivel will not earn any grade above a D.
